MEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO MISERICORDIA IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME

WILKES-BARRE – Joey Scandlon scored on a penalty kick just 1:40 into the second overtime period as visiting Misericordia University posted a 2-1 victory over host King’s College Saturday night at McCarthy Stadium.

With the win, Misericordia ended the regular-season at 10-4-3 and 5-1-1 in league games, while securing the second seed in the Freedom Conference Tournament. King’s, meanwhile slipped to 11-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference to garner the fourth seed.

Misericordia took a 1-0 lead at 18:01 into the game when Kevan Nagle scored on a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off the hands of King’s goalie Andrew O’Shura inside the right post.

Kings Dan Horn tied the game at 1-1 with 9:08 left in the contest when his header off a pass from Billy Elliott from 17 yards out found its way into the net just under the crossbar when Cougar keeper Andrew Lloyd attempted to punch the ball away.

After a scoreless first overtime period, officials ruled a King’s defender fouled a Misericordia player on the far left side of the box and awarded the Cougars a penalty kick despite the protests of the King’s coaching staff.  Scanlan placed the ball inside the right post to give Misericordia the win.

King’s had two golden opportunities early in the match when Alex Martino’s shot hit the post and a second when Billy Elliott’s header in close was knocked away at the last second by Lloyd. In the second half, Elliott again could not cash in when his shot hit the cross bar with 23:38 left in the contest.

The Monarchs will stand as the fourth seed and will travel to Purchase, NY on Wednesday to face top-seeded Manhattanville at a time to be determined. The teams played earlier in the year with Manhattanville posting a 1-0 victory at McCarthy Stadium.
