KING'S WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM SET TO OPEN 2009-10 SEASON AT NEUMANN

WILKES-BARRE – The King's College women's basketball team will tip off its 2009-10 campaign Tuesday as the Lady Monarchs travel to Aston to face Neumann College at 7:00 p.m.

King's women finished last season with an 11-16 record and reached the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference playoffs.  The Lady Monarchs will field one of its youngest teams in years after the loss of six letter-winners, including record-breaking three-point shooter Kaitlyn Fiorino, who concluded her career as the program's third all-time leading scorer with 1,542 points.

King's will suit up 14 players, including six sophomores and eight freshmen. Heading the list of returnees is sophomore point-guard Brittany Muscatell who set a Lady Monarch freshman record with 114 assists, while adding 6.3 points and 4.4 rebounds.  Sophomore guard-forward Paige Carlin started 15-of-26 games and averaged 6.1 points and 3.9 rebounds, while sophomore power forward Julianna Lynott displayed her toughness in 25 starts by leading the team with 7.1 rebounds while contributing 5.0 points.   Sophomore guard Abby Malloy is expected to see a much greater role this season after the graduation of Fiorino. Fellow sophomore guard Nina Magan and Kayla Dick are also looking to make greater contributions.

Donoghue, who enters his fifth season, has brought in a large freshmen class that comes to King's with more potential than any of his previous three recruiting classes.  Katlin Michaels, a 5-6 guard, was the 2008-09 Wyoming Valley Conference “Player of the Year” and scored 1,248 points in her career. Six-foot guard-forward Lindsay Atchison was a third-team senior all-state selection and led Chatham High School to a 27-4 record. Megan Rigous of Warrington, a 5-9 guard, and Scranton native Celia Rader, a 5-5 point-guard, are also players expected to emerge as key contributors.  Rookie guards Jessica Segilia and Morgan Thomas are expected to provide the squad with solid three-point shooting while the 5-10 freshmen tandem of  Molly Dahl and Elizabeth Demko will provide added inside depth.
