KING’S JOEY BENDER NAMED TO NSCAA ALL-REGIONAL TEAM
WILKES-BARRE – King’s College men’s soccer standout Joey Bender (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) has been named to the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team, the NSCAA announced Friday. Bender is the first King’s player ever to be named to the all-regional squad.
After a solid freshman year in 2008 where he scored 23 points, Bender faced the task of filling the void left by the graduation of King’s all-time leading scorer Cameron Audette. He responded with an outstanding sophomore year where he finished second in the Freedom Conference in scoring with 38 points, the third highest single-season total in Monarch history. Bender was second in the conference in goals scored (15) and second in assists (8) while leading the league with six game-winning goals as he led the Monarchs to the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference playoffs.
Bender enjoyed his finest career game on September 10 when he posted three goals and two assists against Penn State Berks. During the season he tallied at least one point in 13 of the 19 games he played in. In his two seasons at King’s, Bender has scored 61 points on 22 goals and 17 assists.
“Joey had a super season for us and is very deserving of such a tremendous honor,” King’s coach Mark Bassett stated. “For him to become our go-to player as a sophomore says a great deal about the talent he possesses. Despite his statistics he still has room for improvement and has just scratched the surface of his potential. We look forward to having him for two more seasons and seeing the progress he continues to make as a player.”
