KING’S MEN’S BASKETBALL EARNS 78-74 VICTORY OVER DELAWARE VALLEY

DOYLESTOWN – The King’s College men’s basketball team put together one of its most balanced efforts of the season as the Monarchs posted a hard-fought 78-74 victory over host Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference matchup Wednesday in Doylestown.

With the win the Monarchs improved to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in Freedom Conference play. Delaware Valley, meanwhile, fell to 6-7 and 1-3 in league games.

The first half was a closely contested affair that featured seven ties and six lead changes.  After the Aggies made a pair of foul shots to close to within 23-22 with 5:54 left in the half, the Monarchs used a driving layup from Jim Schule and a three-pointer from Mike Wagner to build a 28-22 advantage with 4:24 on the clock.

Delaware Valley answered with four straight points from Daryl White, a three-pointer by Chris Ellis, and a layup from Jeremy Beckett to take a 33-30 lead with 1:14 remaining in the half. The Monarchs closed out the half with a 4-0 spurt on the strength of a jumper and two foul shots from Kyle Stackhouse as King’s took a 34-33 lead into the break.

The teams contributed to trade baskets in the second half until a Nick Reisig jumper and a three-pointer by Jim Schule gave the Monarchs a 46-42 lead with 14:43 to play. After the Aggies took a 47-46 lead on a White bucket, Danny Maguschak and Kevin Conroy scored consecutive baskets as King’s built a 50-47 advantage with  9:58 to go.  The Monarchs later extended the lead to 55-49 on a traditional three-point play from Mike McCready but the Aggies fought back to close to within 55-54 after a pair of Chris Ellis foul shots with 7:29 remaining.

King’s eventually built a 62-56 advantage on two free throws from Wagner and one-of-two charity tosses from Conway with 5:04 on the clock.  Delaware Valley used a 13-8 surge to close to 70-69 following a three-pointer from James Jones at the 2:31 mark.

The Monarchs would take a 76-72 lead with 0:11 left after Maguschak canned four free throws on King’s next two possessions. Jones made good on a jumper to cut the score to 76-74 with 0:05 to play. The Aggies would foul Nick Reisig with 0:01 to play and the Monarch sophomore sealed the victory by making both free throws to bring the final score to 78-74.

The Monarchs placed five players score in double figures, led by Maguschak with 15 points and four rebounds. McCready and Conroy followed with 13 and 12 points respectively while Reisig and Kyle Stackhouse chipped in with 10 points each.

The Aggies were paced by the 6-foot-7 White with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and seven blocks while Chris Mayo tallied 18 points. Jones chipped in with 11 points for the Aggies.

King’s returns to action Saturday when the Monarchs host cross-town rival Wilkes at 3:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
