KING’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO DVC, 78-72

DOYLESTOWN – The King’s College women’s basketball team went scoreless for a 4:10 span and the drought proved costly as the Lady Monarchs dropped a 78-72 Freedom Conference decision to host Delaware Valley Wednesday in Doylestown.

With the win, Delaware Valley improved to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in Freedom Conference games.  King’s, meanwhile, slipped to 7-8 and 2-2 in league play.

The Aggies started the game with a 6-0 run just 1:04 into the game. Trailing 12-7, King’s responded with a 7-0 spurt of its own thanks to a three-pointer from Nina Magan, a traditional three-point play from Julianna Lynott, and one of two foul shots by Megan Rigous to take a 14-12 lead with 13:00 remaining in the half.  After the teams traded buckets over the next two minutes of play, the Aggies tied the score at 19-19 on a Jackie Skunkwieler basket with 11:04 on the clock.  King’s then managed a 20-19 lead when Lynott made good on the first of two fouls shots with 10:23 to go.

The Aggies, however, countered with a 10-0 run, capped by a three-point play from Emil Soper to give Delaware Valley a 29-20 lead with 7:48 remaining in the opening stanza.  A Kim Vennera trey would give the Aggies their biggest lead of the half at 34-24 with 4:21 on the clock.

King’s used back-to-back three-pointers and a foul shot from Magan to cut the lead to 34-31 at the 2:31 mark.  The Lady Monarchs continued to fight back as a basket from Abby Malloy and two foul shots by Paige Carlin drew King’s to within 36-35 with 0:14 left.  The Aggies, though, came up big when Brittany Zimmerman canned a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Delaware Valley a 39-35 halftime lead.

In the second half the Aggies stretched the lead to 43-35 on baskets by Vennera and Brittany Battinieri. The Lady Monarchs again answered with a 13-5 run to tie the score at 48-48 on a pair of three-pointers from Paige Carlin with 15:29 left in regulation.  After an Aggie free throw, King’s took its first lead of the second stanza on Carlin’s third three-pointer of the second half to give the Lady Monarchs a 51-49 advantage.

King’s built a 57-54 lead on a Lynott bucket down low at 8:30, but the Lady Monarchs would go cold. The Aggies would respond with an 11-0 run to take a 65-57 on a pair of foul shots from Soper with 5:54 to play.

Brittany Muscatell ended a 4:10 scoreless span with a three-pointer, cutting the Aggie lead to 65-60 with 4:20 remaining.  Delaware Valley took command, however, when a three-point play by Zimmerman and a basket by Jenna Peoples pushed the Aggie lead to 72-62 with 2:24 on the clock.

King’s attempted to respond when Muscatell made one-of-two foul shots and Liz Demko scored on a driving basket to bring the score to 72-65 with 1:27 remaining.  Muscatell then connected on a big three-pointer to cut the lead to 72-68 with 0:55 left.  The Aggies responded with a short jumper by Peoples to extend the lead to 74-68 with 0:27 to play.

After Muscatell hit a pair of foul shots with 0:20 remaining, the teams traded baskets as King’s trailed 76-72 with 0:08 to go in the contest. The Aggies sealed the victory with a pair of Battinieri foul shots with 0:03 remaining.

Rigous paced King’s with 15 points and seven rebounds while Magan added 12 points. Muscatell tallied 11 points, five rebounds, and seven assists while Carlin also tallied 11 points and five assists. Lindsay Atchison contributed nine points, seven rebounds and three assists while Lynott chipped in with six points and 13 boards.

The Aggies were led by Vennera with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Battinieri followed with 16 points and five assists. Peoples netted 14 points and six rebounds while Soper chipped in with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

King’s returns to the court Saturday by hosting cross-town rival Wilkes University at 1:00 p.m. in Scandlon Gymnasium.
