KING'S SWIMMERS WRAP UP MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS AS NEALER, SMITH PLACE 3RD, 5TH IN 1650 FREESTYLE RELAY
WILKES-BARRE -- Maggie Nealer (left) became King's highest female place-winner in the past decade as the King's College swim teams wrapped up the 2010 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships Sunday at the Wilkes-Barre Catholic Youth Center.
As a team, King's women finished in eighth place with 186 points while the men's squad registered 11 points. In all, King's women's team set six new school-records during the three-day event.
Nealer placed third in the 1650-freestyle by setting a new school-record of 19:00.33, shattering the 19:32.28 mark she set last season. Lady Monarch teammate Becca Smith (right) was also outstanding, placing fifth in the same event while also breaking Nealer's previous record as her time of 19:21.70 stands as the second fastest in King's history.
King's came in seventh in the women's 400-freestyle relay as the team of Nealer, Smith, Krystna Homanko, and Carissa Cook posted a 3:59.30, falling just short of the school-record 3:59.08 set last season.
For the men, Eric Stencovage finished 12th in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:25.08.
Other highlights happening during the previous two days include the following:
On Friday, Nealer set the 500-freestyle record in the morning preliminary round with a time of 5:30.92. She eventually placed seventh with a 5:33.16. Also, the second record to fall was the 400-medley relay as the team of Amanda Casey, Homanko, Cook, and Nealer posted a time of 4:36.53.
On Saturday, King's best showing came in the women's 800-freestyle relay where the team of Nealer, Cook, Smith, and Homanko placed fifth with a new school-record time of 8:43.17, surpassing the previous King's record of 8:52.2 set last season.
In the 200 medley relay, King's team of Casey, Susie Hughes, Homanko, and Smith finished seventh by swimming a 2:06.72.
In the women's 400-individual medley, Nealer was 11th with a 5:13.12 after posting school-record 5:12.26 in the qualifying round. Nealer broke the previous Lady Monarch record of 5:17.91 set during the 2007-08 campaign.
Smith finished 10th in the 200-freestyle, twice breaking the school-record in the event. She swam a record 2:06.82 in the preliminary round, then broke the record in the finals with a 2:06.45. She bettered the previous King's record of 2:07.80 set a year ago.
For the men, in the 100-breaststroke, Eric Stencovage finished 12th with a 1:03.86 after posting a 1:03.20 in the qualifying round.
