WILKES-BARRE -- King's College sophomore Tim Carroll advanced to the semi-final round after the first day of competition at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships Saturday at Kirby Park.
Carroll, playing in the number-two flight, won two matches to reach the semi-finals. In his first match, Carroll upset fourth-seeded Bryan Averett of Eastern University 6-2, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, he bested Andrew Scamporino of FDU-Florham 6-2, 6-2
Two King's players won their first round matches before being eliminated in the quarterfinals. at number-three singles, Nick Conte bested Kevin Brandt of Alvernia 6-0, 6-1 but then fell to Dean Tahir of Manhattanville 6-0, 7-5. At fifth singles, David Chen won a 7-5, 6-1 verdict over Robert Felty of DeSales, but then lost to fourth-seeded Brad Sweigart of Lebanon Valley, 7-5, 6-3.
Three Monarchs fell in the first round of the tournament. Jon Hand lost to Joe Li of FDU 6-3, 6-2 in the number-one flight; Mike Steinberger fell to Dan Wilson of Eastern 6-4, 6-1. P.T. Romano was downed by fourth-seeded Cody Hefner of Lycoming 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play King's number-two team of Jon Ferrie and Joe Guza won their first-round pairing by a 9-7 count to Messiah's Kyle Keen and Andrew Wismer. They lost their next match to top-seeded Cesar Leon and Clark Freeman of Wilkes 8-1.
In the second flight, Conte and Steinberger posted an 8-2 win over Adam Dorn and Felty of DeSales, but then dropped an 8-6 decision to third-seeded Andrew Deckert and Joel Ramos of Lebanon Valley. King's number-one team of Hand and Carroll fell 8-4 to Zach Lockwood and Joel Spanger of Alvernia.
