King's Sports Team to Open 2010 Fall Seasons This Week

KING'S ATHLETIC TEAM SET TO BEGIN 2010 FALL CAMPAIGNS

WILKES-BARRE — The King's College fall sports teams will kick off their respective seasons this week as the 2010 campaign gets under way.  The College's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball squads will be in action.

King's will also be utilizing LiveStats technology for all home field hockey, football, and soccer games again this fall.

Wednesday will serve as opening day for four teams as field hockey, men's and women's soccer and volleyball will each debut.

King's field hockey team, will hold the distinction of hosting the first game this year as the Lady Monarchs entertain Keystone College at 4:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex.  The Lady Monarchs were 10-9 a year ago and finished second in the Freedom Conference playoffs. The team returns the vast majority of its 2009 lineup and was predicted to finish second in the 2010 Freedom Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll. The men's soccer team, guided by fifth-year head coach Mark Bassett, will take to the road to open the season with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at SUNY New Paltz in New Paltz, NY.  The Monarchs featured a young squad in 2009, yet managed an 11-7-1 record while advancing to the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament.  New Paltz will be utilizing LiveStats and fans can follow the contest at http://www.sidearmstats.com/newpaltz/msoc/  

The team will open at home Saturday with the Monarch/Royal Classic when King's hosts Penn State Hazleton at 1:00 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium. The Monarchs will then entertain Potsdam State Sunday at 1:00 p.m., also at McCarthy Stadium. The women's soccer team will begin its season on Long Island as the Lady Monarchs travel to face SUNY-Farmingdale at 5:00 p.m. In Farmingdale, NY. The young Lady Monarchs feature just two senior players but have been hit hard by injuries in the pre-season, losing two starters for the year. King's will look to improve upon its 5-14 mark of a year ago under the eye of rookie mentor Frank Carrozza. King's debuts at home September 9 with  a 7:00 p.m. contest against Baptist Bible College.

The women's volleyball team will start a new era when first-year head coach Alicia Orlowski and the Lady Monarchs take to the court for the first time with a 7:00 p.m. road match at Cedar Crest College in Allentown. King's was 19-11 a year ago but graduated four senior starters, including three all-conference players. Seven newcomers dot the 11-player roster in 2010. King's will make its home debut September 15 against Delaware Valley College.

The King's football team will open up Friday in Springfield, MA when the Monarchs face powerful Springfield College at 7:00 p.m. At Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.  

The men's and women's cross country teams will then open its campaign on Saturday with the Delaware Valley College Invitational. The women's meet starts at 10:00 a.m. With the men to follow at 11:00 a.m.
