KING'S WOMEN PICK UP IMPORTANT 71-55 LEAGUE WIN OVER FDU

WILKES-BARRE – Junior point-guard Brittany Muscatell scored a career-high 19 points to lead the King's College women's basketball team to an important 71-55 Freedom Conference victory over visiting FDU-Florham Saturday in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win, King's snapped a two-game conference losing streak, improving to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in league competition. FDU, meanwhile, slipped to 8-12 and 4-6. The Lady Monarchs move back into a first-place tie for the Freedom Conference lead as Misericordia was upset 53-51 at Eastern University. DeSales, which entered the weekend tied with King's at 6-3 in league play, had its game at Delaware Valley postponed due to weather conditions. The game has been rescheduled for Sunday.

King's built an early 13-10 lead after 9:15 of play before the Lady Monarchs strung together six straight points to take a 19-10 advantage after buckets from Muscatell and Paige Carlin. After the Devils cut the lead to 19-12, the Lady Monarchs used a lay-up from Abby Malloy and an offensive rebound and put back from Samantha Simcox as the King's lead grew to 23-12 with 6:04 left in the half.

After a pair of foul shots by FDU, Lindsay Atchison buried a three-pointer to give the Lady Monarchs a 26-14 advantage with 4:57 on the clock.

From there the Devils countered with 10-4 surge, trimming the King's lead to 30-24 with 0:13 to go. But Molly Dahl connected on an inside basket at the 0:04 mark to give King's a 32-24 halftime lead.

In the second stanza, the Lady Monarchs slowly began to extend the lead and eventually took a 44-32 advantage on a three-pointer from Celia Rader with 14:11 left in the contest. The Devils, however, would not quit and a 10-2 run cut the King's lead to 46-42 with 10:19 to go.

The Devisl remained within striking distance, trailing 54-48 with 5:42 to play. But a Rader three-pointer, a traditional three-point play from Carlin, and two foul shots each from Muscatell and Rader keyed key a big 15-1 run by King's as the Lady Monarchs assumed a 69-49 with 1:16 remaining.

Muscatell, who bettered her previous career-high of 18 points, was 7-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 from the foul line. Rader added 18 points with four three-pointers while Carlin finished with 10 points and five assists. Atchison chipped in with eight points.  Defensively, King's forced FDU into 31 turnovers, offsetting a 34-25 Devil lead in rebounding.
