WILKES-BARRE -- Ninth-ranked William Paterson University women's basketball team opened a 42-18 half-time lead and never looked back as the eighth-ranked Pioneers posted a 79-44 victory over Salve Regina University in an NCAA Division III National Tournament opener Friday night in Scandlon Gymnasium.

With the win William Paterson improved to 26-2 and advanc
ed to Saturday's second round against the winner between host King's and SUNY-Oneonta. Salve Regina finished its season at 19-10.
William Paterson took command right out of the gates. With the game tied 2-2, Paterson used a 12-2 run to built a 14-4 lead with 13:27 on the clock after a jumper by Tatiana David and an inside bucket from Floriana Borova.
After a scored on two foul shots from Kaitlyn Birrell, the Pioners countered with a a 12-0 run, capped by a traditional three-point play from April Smith with 10:01 left in the first half as the William Paterson lead swelled to 24-6.

The Pioneers continued to dominate and outscored the Seahawks 18-12 the rest of the way to take a 42-18 lead into the halftime break after Kristine Jackiewicz hit a long running three-pointer at the buzzer.

In the second half William Paterson came out of the locker room and immediate increased the lead to 31 points when April Smith converted a three-point play with 18:17 left in the contest to push the score to 49-18.

Salve Regina looked to answer, using a 14-5 spurt to cut he score to 54-32 with 13:24 to play after a Lindsay Shorey lay-up. Paterson, though pushed the lead back to 30 points after a pair of foul shots by Borova with 7:20 left, upping the score to 64-34. The Seahawks drew no closer than 27 points the rest of the way.

Smith led the Pioneers with 23 points and nine rebounds while Borova added 15 points and eight boards as the lone double-figure scorers.

The Seahawks placed just four players in the scoring column and shot just 19.7 (13-66) percent from the field. Shore led Salve Regina with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and nine blocks while Birrell posted nine points and three boards.
