KING'S WRESTLERS UPEND LYCOMING 21-12 BY WINNING FINAL TWO BOUTS
WILLIAMSPORT -- Peter Dwyer was not supposed to wrestle. The Monarchs' injured senior heavyweight made the trip to Williamsport only to compete in an emergency situation against host Lycoming College.
As fate would have it an emergency arose. With the match tied at 12-12 with two bouts remaining, King's took a 15-13 lead when freshman Ryan Longenberger gutted out a 5-4 decision at 197-pounds. With the heavyweight bout looming as the final contest of the evening, Monarch head coach Ned McGinley had a decision to make - send out junior Cemah Tudae-Torboh, a 197-pounder, or wrestle Dwyer.
McGinley put his full trust in his veteran heavyweight and the result paid off as Dwyer registered a match-clinching first-period pin to send the Monarchs off to a 21-12 victory.
With the win King's improved to 4-7 while Lycoming slipped to 4-6.
The match was close throughout with neither squad taking more than a three-point lead heading into the heavyweight bout. Every contest other than Dwyer's resulted in a decision victory.
King's received a 4-2 decision by Jamie Scarantino (10-10) at 125 and a 4-0 win from Chris Mazzocchi (13-5) at 149 to tie the match at 6-6 after four bouts. Following a Lycoming decision at 157, King's Tommy Desir (17-4) earned a 9-6 victory at 165 to knot the match at 9-9. Lycoming took a 12-9 lead with a win at 174 but the Monarchs tied the score at 12-12 when Shane Stark (7-3) registered a 5-3 decision at 184.
With two bouts left, the Monarchs took a 15-12 lead when Longenberger (10-11) picked up his critical decision at 197. With one match remaining, McGinley went with Dwyer (9-2), who pinned Max Lamport in 2:24 to seal the King's victory.
The Monarchs return to action Wednesday with a 7 PM matchup at Oneonta State University.
