KING'S MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS MISERICORDIA 3-1 TO ADVANCE IN FREEDOM CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTDALLAS, PA ---
David Stroh scored two goals to lead the third-seeded King's College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over host second-seeded Misericordia University in a Freedom Conference semi-final game on Tuesday night at Mangelsdorf Field.
King's advances to the Freedom Conference Championship game for the second straight year with the win and improve their record to 14-5-1 while Misericordia falls to 12-6-2.
The Monarchs got on the board first when Stroh scored unassisted just 7:27 into the game. Stroh took a ball deflected off the Cougars' goalkeeper and fired it into the empty net from 15 yards out. King's was able to hold a 1-0 lead going into halftime thanks to its stingy defense which limited the Cougars' shots. In the second half Misericordia would tie the game up at 1-1 just 5:35 into the period when Chris Panagacos was able to put the ball past the King's goalkeeper.
Niall Croke scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 17:17 left in the game when he scored on a diving header following a
Chris Nygren crossing pass from the right wing. The Monarchs would add an insurance goal when Stroh put the game away with his second score of the game on a header off a corner kick from Nygren with a little over six minutes left.
Stroh finished the game with two goals while Nygren added two assists, upping his team-leading mark to 10 helpers.
Misericordia held a 15-12 shot advantage while King's had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Tyler Wilson made two saves in goal for King's.
King's will now travel to St. Davids, PA to face top-seeded Eastern University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Freedom Conference Championship game. Eastern was a 3-0 winner over fourth seeded FDU-Florham earlier on Tuesday. The winner will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Eastern defeated King's 2-1 in the team's previous meeting on October 22 on a tiebreaking goal with 12 minutes left in regulation.
