KING'S WOMEN'S LAXERS FALL TO SECOND-SEEDED MISERICORDIA IN FREEDOM SEMI-FINALSDALLAS, PA --- Erin Baker scored seven goals, including the last three of the game to lead the second-seeded Misericordia University women's lacrosse team to a 17-14 victory over third-seeded King's College in the semi-finals of the Freedom Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field in Dallas, PA.
Misericordia advances to Saturday's championship game at FDU-Florham, a 15-3 winner in the other semi-final game, and improves their record to 9-8 while the Monarchs see their season end at 8-7.
The Monarchs opened up the game with goals by
Breanna Schurgot and
Gabriella Morrocu to take a 2-0 lead. The Cougars responded with the next six goals over a five minute stretch to take a 6-2 lead with just over 19 minutes left in the first half. Melina Juliano and Liz Mulvey had three goals each during the stretch. Morrocu cut the deficit to 6-3 with a goal with 18:10 left.
Misericordia's Erin Baker scored the next three goals for the Cougars but each time she did King's responded with a goal of their own to keep the deficit at three. Morrocu scored twice and
Kendra McCoy had one goal for the Monarchs.
Anastasia Araviakis and
Sarah Almony scored back-to-back goals to cut the Cougars advantage to 9-8 with 7:27 left in the half. The Cougars got a goal from Mulvey and the Monarchs got a goal from Schurgot to set a 10-9 halftime score. King's outscored Misericordia 6-3 over the last 15 minutes of the half.
The Monarchs evened the score to begin the second half with a goal by McCoy. Misericordia got back-to-back goals from Juliano and Olivia Garcia to take a 12-10 advantage with 24:40 left in the game. Araviakis scored to make it a one-goal game before the Cougars added two more goals from Brooke North and Baker to increase the lead to 14-11. King's responded with three straight goals from Morrocu, Almony, and Schurgot to tie the game at 14 with eight minutes left. Misericordia responded with three straight goals by Baker in the next 3:30 for the victory.
Misericrodia outshot King's 49-20 including a 37-17 advantage in shot on goal. The Cougars held a 33-22 advantage in groundballs and 24-9 in draw controls.
Gabriella Morrocu led King's with five goals and two assists while
Anastasia Araviakis posted two goals and three assists.
Breanna Schurgot scored three goals while
Kendra McCoy and
Sarah Almony had two each.
Victoria Zawacki made 20 saves in goal including nine on free position shots by the Cougars.
Misericordia was led by Erin Baker's seven goals while Melina Juliano had four goals and two assists. Liz Mulvey scored four goals while Olivia Garcia had a goal and an assist. Brooke North added a goal and Ashley Hobbs had an assist. Katie McLoughlin made three saves.
